IT Analyst Group Proves They Know Nothing: Wireless To Take Over In Three Years? Nope.
The Burton Group released a report, suggesting that, with the help of Wi-Fi 802.11n, many companies will be switching their wired LANs over to wireless networking. What a ridiculous claim.
It’s uncertain as to what company was behind the funding of the Burton Group report, but it’s obviously clear that this report was put together in an attempt to publicize selling upcoming network technology.
“One can analyze the differences between 802.11n and Ethernet with regard to performance, security, manageability, cost and impact on staff,” DeBeasi said. “However, the definitive and unalterable competitive advantage that 802.11n has over Ethernet is pervasive mobility.”
For those of us living in the real world and not at network fantasy camp, we know that wireless is a far from perfect technology. Sure, in a couple years from now, the technology may improve a bit, but if we look back two years from now and see how far we’ve come, well, it’s really hasn’t changed all that much. Realistically, the technology is still at least 6-10 years away before we start to see LANs becoming completely wireless, and even so, it will only be very small networks that make the switch over. This report is completely ridiculous.
Wireless technology is not a magic cure-all solution for our networks and best left for laptop-surfing at Starbucks.
