Apparently if you backup your mpdata file under your game’s profile, you should be ok. This is the file that contains all of the multiplayer information — SO BACK IT UP EVERY NIGHT! It’s located here: C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4\players\profiles\PROFILENAME\mpdata

I’m with Punkzilla on this one. COD titles have always been awesome and there weren’t any saved ranks or anything in COD/2 so just play it for fun. Christ I haven’t even bought it yet so consider yourself lucky ffs.

No… it is NOT being obsessed with rank. You actualy unlock better guns with that shit. So if you get knocked back to level 0, you have to shoot with the lame starter guns again. and that is really sick.

The starter weapons thus far aren’t that bad. I can’t say that I have gotten upgraded weapons yet though.
All in all, have fun, rank isn’t everything. In my opinion, ranking in any game is dumb.

Ranks ARE important. You dont realize how badly the vanilla sniper rifle sucks, or how much better the .50AE Desert Eagle is versus the crapola M9…

The problem with this is that you can actually swap out mpdata files with your friends and get all their perks and unlocks. I went from level 26 to 44 from sharing with my bro the other day!

I realized it had to be possible when our internet connection went out and so we played on LAN instead… and I actually got a promo. Then it hit me. If I can get XP on lan, then its stored on my PC, so I can share it somehow. Took me all of 3 minutes to locate a likely file, and voila… Red tiger striped ACOG m4, here I am!

Ranks are important u fucknuts…thats why we play ONLINE (MULTIPLAYER) They created the multiplayer that way to gain ranks and become a better player and for enjoyment! (same as BF2)

It’s like this: u play a level on SinglePlayer for an hour and everytime u “complete” it…it resets and u begin over and over again!

I just lost 40 or so hours of play and all my rankings. Am I pissed? Damn skippy! When you work all those hours to get the weapons to the state in which they should come standard, and you lose all the work and have to start over. It’s a pisser. Ive made it to commander (lvl 55) in this game, got all the gun unlocks and all the perks.. Havent had a single promblem with this game. I wouldn’t even give a fuck if my Rank started all over again. I’m seriously pissed off. I worked last night for 3 hours to get my character to level 40 (almost 12 points away), and then, the next day, I played and I was back to level 37. What the hell, man, seriously COD is going down the drain if this keeps up.

ok this just in. I’ve been searching, and found a solution. PS3 free online servers have run into an overdose of population increase and have confused the servers. They put all your saved ranks on different servers, meaning every time you level uo its put on a different server. The only way to keep leveling up is too keep playing and reach the server at which your first COD4 character was on. This means you have to start and finish a game, turn off the PS3, and log back on and repeat until you’re on your server. Then when you turn the game off, you will have to do it again. Can anyone say “MASTER SERVER??!!!” The master server will come soon enough…but when it does, all progress anyone has made will be null. NICE EH?

Oh and the last post was for PS3, I have no clue about other systems. Hell, I feel damn sorry for those of you out there with Xbox 360’s. Man, this is really disturbing, I have been a fan of COD for years, but never has it been so dishonored. I am personally blaming the people at infinity ward, and the previous makers of COD3 for handing their protegy off to dumbasses.

I have a hypothesis. But before I can prove it I need to know, how many (on the PS3) played and finished the story normal mode before they realized their online was messing up? For me, last night I finished the story mode, and played online for a while. Then, afterwards, I logged on and my rank kept on changing. Is it just me or does completing the story mode affect the memory so that no data on the online player can be distributed to the mixed up servers? Well, I will try to erase my data (for all of your benifeit) and see if it works.

Does anyone know when a patch or something is coming out to fix the online ranking problems for the ps3? i love this game but I have lost my rank three times and i refuse to play it any more until this rank losing shit is fixed.

Call of Duty 4 is simpily one of the best games out there until i lost my rank. I was a level 24 unlocked some cool shit, and the next time i went on line everything was gone. I love to play this game for fun but it really does suck to start with only 3 weapons. Its fun when you play around with friend in an online game, but some times i like to try, and unlock some new stuff.

I agree with reaper. I’ve lost at least 12 levels, plus all the perks, guns, challenges and nifty camo that comes with that. It takes a HUGE amount of enjoyment out of the game, and is eminently frustrating. It is just a game, but I spent a LOT of time earning the M4 Red Tiger camo, only to lose it three times. I hope the get a patch soon, and I’ll play very little until they do. Of course, if we all quit playing, the servers would probably be fine and then they’d not have this problem. I’m sorry you all are having it, but at least now I know I’m not the only one.

Curiously, it’s keeping track of my time played, total kills, score, etc. Just not my online RANK. It wouldn’t piss me off as bad if I hadn’t started Prestige mode yesterday, and had reaquired almost all the goodies from the first time through. I’m sure they’ll have a patch or another soultion soon. If not, I’ll have to switch to Ghost Recon 2………..and say FU to COD5 in the future.

Yes, i am having the same shit problem. Yesterday I was at Prestige level 49 I played all night and most of today. I never turned the ps3 off. I made it to level 54. little while ago and when I turned it off to go to sigle player then went back to multi player it was back at 49.. I was fucking pissed. All the work and time wasted. If something happens and I go back to 0 rank I will sell this game on e bay and never buy cod again.

You’d think, with the problems they’ve had with type of thing from the PC version forward, that they’d have had their crap together. But you’d be thinking wrong.

Whats fun is watching ranks build and being able to open new guns and combos of weapons which should give u the edge over lower ranked opponents…but ive played for hours 3x in 2 days and back to rank 1 everytime. Very frustrating because when u play against people that ranks do save or are higher u dont even have a prayer to kill anyone or survive. What fun is that if u cant even compete?

And that’s not good based on my theory to this problem and my previous research displayed on this page. However, some of you may only have to deal with 4 servers. Or, like myself, you have deal with, oh about 20. And that means 20 games of worthless crap. Full games. No short cuts. Sucks don’t it?

I was a lvl24 and was playing about 10 hours. I don’t feel like playing it now, because I’m not willing to spend another minute on something that will be deleted due to Infinity Ward. I used to think this was the best online shooter, but it just sucks ass unless they fix this.

backing up your profile doesnt work either i had to reformat my pc so i backed it up thought id be ok but when i replaced it it says something up with stats need to reset stats blah blah nooooo :(

But with respect about ranks shouldnt be worried about, i totally disagree, you play with the standard weapons and come across someone with example P90, you have pretty much no chance of survival…

I saw the comments about hours spent ranking the first time around and, quite frankly, was disgusted by the complaints. 18 to 30 hours is nothing. That is coming from someone who takes a good 3 or 4 times as long to rank than most people, AND only gets to play 2 or 3 hours once every couple days. Besides, the fun is in working towards the ranks and unlocks. Each time your stats get deleted, you should be able to gain them back faster, since you SHOULD be better anyway. Also, you can’t blame IW for Vista crashing and reseting your stats and such. When you tell the computer to “save”, it’s never ACTUALLY done at the time. That’s why you NEVER shut down the computer by simply cutting power. It’s just how the system works, and IW cannot do anything about that, so it is unfair to make them try and compensate you for something that isn’t their falt. In any case, I believe they fixed the reseting rank problem when it comes to switching servers. In all honesty, I think everyone complaining about CoD4 are just a bunch of lazy ass pansies.

I just lost my level 55 profile. I’m extremely pissed off since I spent over 40 hours getting there not too mention all the wasted hours of trying get my challenges up. Well fuck this game. I wont come back to it until they until Infinity Ward go to the effort of fixing this. At the moment, I’m not going to put the effort in playing it for this to possibly happen again. Why should you have to back it up everytime you play the game? If they wanted to add a feature of ranks why didn’t they go to the trouble in making it work properly for all people who play the game and not just for advanced users of the game who go to the effort of backing their profile up. I think it is distgusting what they are doing to the people who have invested so much time into the game only to have it bite them in the ass. Also I would like to rant about Vista. While playing Call of Duty 4 on Vista, you are prone to getting random crashes causing you to possibly lose your profile completly. Well this happend to me and I’m not please with Microsoft and Infinity Ward for producing such useless crap. Thanks.

Hey - is this problem fixed? I had to reinstal this game and - I saved all this folder - with data (player) but - still I got that bloody error and now I’m private :) so any body may be knows how to fix that? if no - than - hell I will feel as I have been in prison or something and now starting from penal platoon again…

It’s interesting. Mine was fixed after my character froze. He didn’t get the levels he lost, but it stopped keeping it at the same place after I got upgrades. I think someone got wise and downloaded all info into a main server which is godly hard to do when we are talking about, ohhh about 50000 players data and files including upgraded weapons. So for once, infinity ward did something partially reliable. Though connections still suck monkey balls.

I just had all mine reset, i was Presige level 6 rank 39, and they shot me back to Presige level 3 rank 50, WTF?! im super pissed man you pay all this money for 360/live/60 dollar video game and the damn this screws up, then i call up xbox live and they dont fix anything and hang up on me a few times, f’n jews…

yes i got cod 4 for Xmas and played it to rank 35 and went on a server that put a mod on and my rank started back at 1 i now intend on taking my game back to the shop as on the reviews it got a score for being ranked like battlefield 2 so the game $%cks me off…………….

well ranking helps cuz i cant even unlock any game modes or anything.. im stuck with free-for-all, team death match, and mercenary death match.. if i cant rank then i cant unlock anything.. im pretty good at pwning people and i wanna show dat i can wit ma rank.. but… yea.. i cant… but its still fun 2 play.. so rite now im alrite wit da rank keep restarting.. (for now) but wut i cant stand is when the connection gets lost and i lose control of my player and people kill me like a bitch.. and also wen it says trying to find stat client 290 for something something something and it keeps having errors.. i have 80gb ps3 and its hooked up 2 da internet can sum1 tell me wut i can do to stop the thing from saying error cuz when im in the middle of playing it sends me back to player menu and says error trying to find stat client 290 blah blah blah.. some1 help me plzz tell me here or msg me on ps3 my ID is joker502… everytime i get 2 rank 3 (almost lance corporal) it restarts b4 i can do anything… so im in a worse position then u guys.. at least u guys can play things of a rank 4+ i cant even do dat… plz sum1 help me out

my bud e hump was 21 and his ranking went down to a 4 the he went up to eleven turned it off then he went down to a five. and why didnt they have all the bugs worked out wen they released it

LOL! Well said. People are whining about ranks and wepons. I started playing this last night for the first time and only had “crap” guns. I played the whole night till level 22 without using any perks and guns that i recived. Still i got better points than the majority of the higher level players. If you’re so crampy just kill one higher ranked player and pick up hes/her gun!

yo, dude if you hate gamers, why do go on a gamer forum? Anyway i got mine fixed when I started a new account and started all over. I believe that if you restart, you are put on a main server, or just wait until they place your main account on a main server, and you’ll be fine. I even got to the second prestige level and almost got a gold sniper rifle after I did so.

Also, all those Xbox360 guys out there laughing, we don’t pay $5 a month. Oh and I believe that anyone of these guys on the forum could easily get a gf, however they are just too high maintainance. And it’s true. Really good weapons have a tendancy to be just as good as starter ones, but it sucks if you lose it, just because.

Ok been reading allot of comments with regards to profiles on COD4, if you go into COD4 programe files and look for the file called players right click and copy this file and rename it anythin you want and store it somewhere on your hard drive or copy it to a data disc. In future when payin COD4 and you loose ur profile rename the file you saved back to players and copy and paste it back into the place where you origionaly got it , it will restore your profile. Good gaming folks.

If you have to unistall COD4 you can still save loosing your online stats and profile. I done this and it worked. Before you unistall COD4 goto COD4 programe files and locate the file players right click and copy this file then rename it anything you want. I sugest writing the file to disc as it safer. Unistall COD4, do a serch and delete any remaining files associated with COD4. Re Instrall the game,play multiplayer online and create a new profile play online for a cpl of mins the exit COD4 locate the file you copied and paste it to your desktop and rename it players, now locate the same file in the COD4 programe files on your hard drive and paste it in and over rite existing file now lauch COD4 go to multiplayer and you will See your amazing profile with nothing lost. Hope this helps as I found this by accident i wanted to move my COD4 from 1 pc to another without loosing my profile and it worked perfect. Good luck.

when i uninstalled it asked me if i wanted to save my profiles and obv. i clicked yes. when i reinstalled it all worked fine and i didnt loose anything

I played for so long about 27 lvls then I formated my pC and my rank was gone
I love the game so i started over and am now lvl 47 :D

Ok, well I was level 55. It took me a long time to reach that rank because I dont have hours and hours to play. I had to reinstall windows do to a hard drive error that would not allow my hard drive to boot. I went into cod4 after I installed it and none of my information was there. I put in the multiplayer name that I used and nothing there. Wtf? Ok so I spent 50 buck on this crap>>> I am extremely upset now.

I guess I will have to write and complain. Not that it will do any good.
